There’s a couple of giveaway signs of a system leaking water. The main one is your water pressure on your boiler. If your pressure drops frequently, requiring you to re-pressurise the system, there’s likely water escaping somewhere. Whilst it can be anywhere from under floorboards and behind walls, the usual areas are the connection pipes and radiator pipes. Check the floors under your radiators and the pipes below your boiler for water droplets. A sealer may be all that’s required for slight leaks. In instances where the pressure is dropping significantly with no obvious signs of where the leak is, a trace and access service may be required.
If you smell gas, do these in order…
• Extinguish any naked flames (candles, gas hobs, gas fires, and turn your boiler off to extinguish the pilot light)
• Turn off electrics at the circuit board to prevent any sparks igniting
• Ventilate your home by opening doors and windows
• Turn your gas off by turning the lever beside your gas meter

Natural gas is odourless. The silent killers are carbon monoxide and radon gas in homes. You need detectors for those. For your mains gas supply, the foul-smelling odour is mercaptan (methanethiol) that’s put into the natural gas supply to make leaks detectable.
If you smell gas, it is (usually) an emergency. The smell is strongest at the source. If it’s in your kitchen, there is a possibility a hob control has been left or a burner’s extinguished causing gas to escape rather than burn.
When you connect to the National Gas Emergency Helpline, an advisor will go through a series of questions with you and advise on you the most appropriate safety measures.
It is a free service and they will get a Gas safe Engineer to your property within one hour. As an emergency service, National Grid Engineers attend to make things safe. Not to carry out repairs. They do not disconnect appliances. They will disconnect your gas supply until you arrange for a Gas Safe Engineer to attend and for appliance repairs.
Breathe! Water leaks are one of the most misunderstood “emergencies” in the home. Rarely are they as troublesome as homeowners imagine. Every home has several ways to shut the water supply off. There are several isolation valves near every appliance connected to a cold-water feed, and there’s an internal stopcock and an external one as a backup. Refer to our guide about How to Turn Off Your Water Supply in an Emergency, then give us a call to book a visit. It’s rare for a mains supply line to rupture, which given the extremely high pressure of water flow, will require an emergency plumber to shut the water off at street level, if you don’t have a key to do it yourself.
